The Judiciary has opened the search for a new judge to join the Supreme Court of Kenya following the declaration of a vacancy published in the Kenya Gazette on January 13, 2026.

The announcement invites qualified legal professionals to apply for one position at the country’s highest court, offering a competitive pay package and a fixed retirement age.

The vacancy was formally declared by Chief Justice Martha Karambu Koome through Gazette Notice No. 380, issued under the Judicial Service Act. The notice confirms that the opening is for one post, referenced as V/No. 1/2026, and comes with a gross monthly salary ranging from Sh956,192 to Sh1.26 million, excluding benefits.

“Pursuant to Paragraph 3 Part II, First Schedule of the Judicial Service Act, I, Martha Karambu Koome, Chief Justice of the Republic of Kenya, for and on behalf of the Judiciary of Kenya, declare a vacancy in the Office of Judge of the Supreme Court of Kenya,” the notice reads.

According to the Gazette, the successful applicant will serve until the mandatory retirement age of 70 years, with the option to retire early after reaching 65, as provided for under Article 167(1) of the Constitution.

On pay, the Judiciary said the remuneration will be guided by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission. “The Gross Monthly Remuneration Package excluding benefits is Minimum of Sh. 956,192 and Maximum of Sh. 1,268,996,” the notice stated.

The Gazette also details the wide role of a Supreme Court judge, noting that the court holds “exclusive original jurisdiction to hear and determine disputes relating to the elections to the office of President arising under Article 140.”

In addition, the judge will hear appeals from the Court of Appeal and “any other Court or Tribunal as prescribed by national legislation.” The court also issues advisory opinions to national and county governments, handles appeals arising from tribunals set up to consider the removal of judges, and hears applications linked to declarations of a state of emergency.

Applicants must meet strict constitutional and legal standards outlined under Article 166(2) and (3) of the Constitution. These include holding “a law degree from a recognized university, or be an advocate of the High Court of Kenya, or possess an equivalent qualification in a common-law jurisdiction.”

Candidates are also required to have at least 15 years of experience, either as a superior court judge, distinguished academic, judicial officer, legal practitioner, or a mix of these roles.

Beyond academic and professional background, applicants must show “a high moral character, integrity and impartiality,” in line with Chapter Six of the Constitution on Leadership and Integrity. The Judiciary also expects strong professional skills, clear communication, and sound judgment.

“The appointment shall be made in accordance with Article 166 (1) (b), (2) and (3) of the Constitution,” the notice said, adding that interested and qualified persons should submit their applications through the Judicial Service Commission jobs portal.

The vacancy follows the death of Supreme Court Judge Mohammed Ibrahim, who passed away on December 17, 2025, while receiving treatment at a hospital in Nairobi.
